Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Classroom in a Book

Book by Adobe Creative Team. Adobe Press 320 pages Paperback Published 2007-05-24. Description: Dreamweaver CS3, now included as part of Adobe's Creative Suite 3, is the leading professional Web design and development application in the market, and is a must-have tool for any Web designer or developer. Dreamweaver CS3 offers new CSS layouts, a unified CSS panel, and CSS visualization tools that let users create interactive Web sites without having to delve into code. Dreamweaver users can now create dynamic interfaces using the Spry framwork for Ajax. (Spry is 99% HTML, so it's accessible to both designers and developers). Spry widgets (pre-built user interface components) let users quickly add common user interface components to Web pages. Each chapter in this full-color book contains a project that builds upon the reader's growing knowledge of Dreamweaver, while review questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the most important skills. Readers will learn how to customize a Dreamweaver workspace, apply cascading style sheets, enter headline and body text, insert graphics and rollovers, and add links to a page. They'll also learn how to add interactive elements to their site, such as behaviors, effects, and Flash video; add new code or code snippets; and publish their finished site to the Web.

SPECIAL NOTE: Before starting the lessons in the book visit www.peachpit.com/dwcs3cib for important lesson and project file updates.

        • Review:: 'A good book I think its a good book for those how don't have a clue about dreamweaver, It don't go into the deapth of dreamweaver, but is well explaind and will be a quick way to get into html/xtml design. well whorth the money.
        • Review:: 'Good not Great Having been a Go Live user for a while I needed something to help me make the change to Dreamweaver. Usually, the Classroom in a Book series are brilliant, this one not so. As a self-confessed dummy when it comes to technical things like using Dreamweaver, I found there were at least three chapters where I couldn't complete the exercises as shown. Generally very good. I would recommend it but only if you bought a companion book like Dreamweaver CS3 for Windows and Macintosh (Visual [QuickStart]Create? Guide)to fill in the gaps. It was good, worthwhile, not great.
        • Review:: 'Disappointing... This series is generally very good. This book had a few troublesome problems. The lessons are good but the files on the accompanying cd are flaky. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why something was not working. Beware the odd flaws in the exercise files! Can't see the stylesheet linked to the cd? Neither could I. Not your problem. Buy a different book.
        • Review:: 'Not very good, even for a beginner I bought this book because I remembered using the CIB series to learn Photoshop 3. That book was very good. This one is not, and is definitely not worth the $54.99 list price. There is very little explanation of WHY you do each task, and most (if not all) of the examples are nearly complete already - you just add the last bit of the project. You don't create anything from scratch, you just follow along and complete the project with little to no explanations about what you're doing or why. Also, the lesson on creating forms informs you 4 pages into the lesson that although the lesson teaches how to create a form, the form won't actually do anything when you click "submit" because you'll need to "see Dreamweaver Help, 'Building applications visually'" to learn that part. While constructing forms that can't do anything may seem helpful, I expected a little bit more from a book that lists for $55 and has "Adobe Press" as the author/publisher. I would have thought this book would be the most thorough beginner class you could find, but instead it's more like the first day of the beginner class, where they give the overview of what you'll learn. I feel especially disappointed when I see other books such as the Dreamweaver CS3 Bible that are four times as thick and $5.00 cheaper.

        • Review:: 'Simply Great Starting from the very basics this amazing book will teach you every great stuff you need to know in order to make better graphics. I just loved it ! :-)
        • Review:: 'detailed and helpful. this is a helpful and very specific book that after learning the basics and intermediate tutorials that are found everywhere on the net, should provide the basis for using after effects for compositing and a plethora of other detailed tasks. it seems there is very little after effects cannot do, though not necessarily conveniently so. The author lays out his case with examples and opinions and has a patient steady hand in doing so. It's not the authors fault that theres just no 'bullet point' way to do this - its all details, and this book does a great job in trying to 'boil it down' for you. bottom line - if you want to composite with after effects and go beyond motion graphics - this book will show you how. A great book for an incredible software tool. I was going to rate 4 out of 5 due to some sections that could be more simple/concise and convey the same message - but realized that would be nit-packing an overall great workbook. Thanks Mark! Very helpful book indeed, I'll take a long time to digest it. And thanks for being inclusive of PC users in a mac-heavy industry (I'm not cool enough for a fruit-themed workflow). Cheers.
        • Review:: 'THE book on After Effects In spite of the fact that Mark grew up in an orphanage and his Evil Twin looks like a wild man, I like his work a lot! This book is a full-on treasure. I buy and read a great many books of this type on several topics, and I tell you, you cannot find a book this good, anywhere. Each chapter is absolutely loaded with exactly the kind of info you need, and the kind that Adobe does not provide. Mark approaches the material from the standpoint of best practices, and that is what you need. In some ways this book might even be better than if you could apprentice under Mark. If you want to be a professional compositor, this is THE book. Mark's understanding encompasses a full range of possible tools, so if the best way to accomplish a particular task involves a 3rd party plugin, he will tell you. Basically, if you have learned the basics of AE, and you want to learn how professional compositing is done by people who know their trade, this is the book for you. Mark hits nearly all of the important points and addresses numerous issues that actually occur in real effects work. His use of screenshots to illustrate is excellent, but mostly it's his coaching that stands out. He knows what you will run into, he knows what will likely cause you to stumble, and he knows AE better than most professional compositors. Each chapter is precious. I have never read a technical book that I would rank above this one. I don't have a higher rating than what this book earns. I only wish more authors of technical books would come somewhere near this level of quality.
        • Review:: 'Adobe After Effects CS3 Professional Studio Techniques is a MUST HAVE! After Effects CS3 Professional Studio Techniques came in the post today from Amazon.com. I've already read it. It's incredible and is blowing my mind. It's for a somewhat more advanced level of After Effects user, but someone who is just getting started should be able to understand it easily. The first couple of chapters explain the interface in great detail. If you're moving from something like Apple Shake, or another compositing program over to AE, this book will certainly help. The gentleman who wrote it was a compositor on "Pirates of the Carribean" and "The Day After Tomorrow" (God, I love that film) and works for The Orphanage (the same company that developed the Magic Bullet plug-in sold by [RedGiant]Create? Software [I recommended that plug-in highly]). It has a wealth of info on just about every required standard plug-in in the After Effects interface, and a few that aren't standard. If you've ever wanted to know everything "Levels" does or how to read it's Histogram properly, or if you wanted to know how to draw color curves accurately and properly (something that I've never had the hang of before and I'm sure many of you realize can go devastatingly array), then this is your book! Probably one of the neatest things is that it explains (in detail) the nature of the transfer modes and exactly what they do, something I'd never really seen done before. The most important thing in the book is that it explains the 32 Bit HDR and Color Management for CS3. In fact, chapter 11 is completely dedicated to it. It also has a detailed chapter on just motion tracking techniques that is mind numbing! Some of the biggest topics it covers are Color Correction, Color Keying, and (the infamous) Rotoscoping/Paint. It also gives tips on how to speed up AE and how to properly use proxies, pre-renders, nest comps, etc. I've never read anything that breaks down AE in this great of detail. Also, it comes with a DVD with a ton of demo plug-ins, project files, and HD footage that covers the topics in the text. Whether you're new to After Effects or a seasoned pro, you will certainly find something in this book that will make your compositing life a little easier. Highly recommended.
        • Review:: 'Everything you ever wanted to know that Adobe would not tell you I have read 1/2 of this book straight through and referred to the rest as needed. I was a novice when I began. Now I can make a two-sided Euro fall down, hide blemishes, combine simple footage with gradients to create beautiful animated backgrounds and much more. The pages of this book are lush glossy and full color. Trish and Chris write succinctly and clearly about some very advanced concepts. The extensive sample projects on the DVD are well annotated and bring the concepts to life. A must buy for anyone using After Effects. Just when you are asking yourself...can I do this? They read you mind, and tell you in the next sentence.

        • Review:: 'Quite an instructional Book!! This book not only teaches you how to use MS Project, but it also explains a lot about Project Management. Anyone learning MS Project should also understand Project Management, just like you should know grammar when you are using MS Word. This book also uses good examples and is very enjoyable to read. In fact, it teaches in such a way that allows me to be able to grasp its definitions! Very helpful!!

        • Review:: 'Excellent BOOK I find this book very easy to read. I am a beginner and the book is very friendly describing the info. Go ahead. You will not regret paying the $$$. The good thing that every keyword in the text is blue-colored. If you read the fist part (5 chapters) you will understand the PM very well (if you are a novice). Good for students and professionals too. The CD attached for practicing is very easy too. I am happy.

Description: Get in-depth exam prep for Exam 70-536, a core MCTS exam for the new Microsoft Technology Specialist and Professional Developer certifications and build real-world job skills. • Review:: 'A Good Start This book is a good start, but you won't pass the test by just reading it. Experience and practice test will go a long way to help.
        • Review:: 'I consider this book my .net programming bible... Comming from the 1.0 and 1.1 framework, this book really helped me get up to speed with 2.0. It covers many new capabilies and enhancements of the new framework (isolated storage, generics, etc...). This is my "MAIN" reference book now... its almost like my programming bible.
        • Review:: 'Hundreds! If not thousands! OK, this book is a little dated, but I got a really good chuckle from an anecdote relayed by one of the authors that is still funny. Early in the book, on page 68, Mr. Wildermuth attempts to assert his expertise to the reader by declaring that he has "written hundreds, if not thousands, of lines of code". I have shown this little blurb around to many of my colleagues and clients. It has turned into somewhat of a euphemism for a n00b. For instance: Dev1: "How did the interview go with Ted?" Dev2: "Not great. He's got a good personality, but his skill set is a little weak." Dev1: "What kind of stuff has he worked on?" Dev2: "I would say that he has probably written hundreds, if not thousands, of lines of code." Both: "ROFL!" or Dev1: "Holy cow! Come over here and look at this mudball of code that I have to support now." Dev2: "Wow! You're not kidding. Who wrote this?" Dev1: "Who do you think? Joe." Dev2: "Oh man, he's written hundreds ..." Dev1: "If not thousands!" Dev2: "... of lines of code." All that said, this book does the job. It helped me pass the test. I have taken quite a few Microsoft exams and I have usually turned to the Microsoft Press Self-Paced Training Kit books as a first resource. This book lives up to the good name the series has earned for itself. I see from many of the reviews here that readers are disappointed if the book doesn't spoon feed them all the way through the exam. I would say that, for myself, preparing for an exam includes a multi-pronged approach. It starts with these books and continues to MSDN and Transcender. But most importantly, I think you have to definitely open up Visual Studio and practice. Write some code! Maybe even hundreds, if not thousands, of lines. ;)
        • Review:: 'Helped me pass the first time...BUT Do not expect to pass test 70-536 using this book as the only resource. You will not do it. Do not think this book is for beginner's, it's not. You must have a firm grasp of object oriented programming to understand .NET. Also, don't trust the Practice Exam CD that comes with the book. I've found more than a few questions that have incorrect answers (according to MSDN). Even with all this said, I'm 100% positive I would NOT have passed this test the first take if I did not use this book in my studying. This book formed a great foundation for .NET 2.0. There is a lot of content in the book and I think they put it in a format that is easy to understand. Some of the content such as Code Access Security, WMI, and COM Interopability are a bit thin, but you can make that difference up with MSDN. My recommendation is to buy this book. Read it from cover to cover. DO ALL THE QUESTIONS, EXAMPLES, LABS, AND PRACTICE TESTING Once you're done with all of this, if you have money to spend, perform the Microsoft learning online content. If you can't afford that, go to online practice test sites, such as [MeasureUp]Create? and do those. Once this is all done, you should have a grasp of your weak spots. Hit those again and then take the test.

Cover of ISBN 1567200850Insurance Regulation in the United States
An Overview for Business and Government:
Book by Peter M. Lencsis. Quorum Books 160 pages Hardcover Published 1997-05-30. Description: Insurance attorney Peter Lencsis provides a unique, objective description of the insurance regulatory system as it exists today in the United States. Concise but comprehensive, it provides an easily grasped, immediately useful explanation of how the regulatory system works. Because of the federal [McCarran]Create?-Ferguson Act, most insurance regulation is left to the individual states, and is thus non-uniform. But there is still a common pattern to state regulation, explains Lencsis, due in large part to the activities of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and its own uniform standards. Lencsis covers the formation and licensing of insurance companies and the regulation of their underwriting and investment activities, as well as the insurance insolvency laws and guaranty funds, assigned risk plans, reinsurance, holding companies, and the regulation of agents and brokers. An important resource for insurance industry professionals, and others in regulatory agencies of the public sector.

Introduction to United States Government Information Sources-

Book by Joe Morehead. Libraries Unlimited 491 pages Paperback Published 1999-08-15. Description: Whether used as a text for library and information science students, as a resource for professional librarians needing to access the information produced by or for the federal establishment, or as a guide for researchers, this acclaimed title is an essential resource and a valuable tool guiding readers through the vast and constantly changing terrain of government information in print and electronic forms. Morehead describes administrative machinery and information systems of the Government Printing Office (GPO); introduces general checklists, indexes, and guides to government information; describes the Congress and intrinsic sources that comprise the legislative process; and details many other government publications. Morehead provides a broad overview of public access issues, giving special attention to the impact of electronic formats (notably the Internet's World Wide Web) on the dissemination of federal government information. He then describes administrative machinery and information systems.
        • Review:: 'An excellent way to learn about government information.

If you're wondering just where all the useful information is in the so-called "information explosion," this item just might be for you. Joe Morehead's book is a part of Library Unlimited's "Library and Information Science Text series" (intended as a textbook for librarians in training), but the book is an excellent resource for genealogists, business researchers, educators-anyone who wants to learn more about the vast and varied store of information the U.S. government makes available. And you don't have to be a doctoral student to use this book: Morehead writes in a clear and concise style; facsimiles of pages from various reference sources are included, so that the newcomer to a source will know what to expect.

Of especial interest to newbies and Internet veterans alike is a the first chapter, "Public Access in the Electronic Age," which covers the legal aspects of information provision as well as electronic sources of government information. The history and operation of the Government Printing Office and the Depository Library System are discussed. General reference sources, sources of legislative, executive, administrative, legal, statistical, technical, geographic information are covered in detail. One of the best texts for learning what the government publishes and where to find it.

      • Review:: 'Full of good advice I found the book to be packed with invaluable advice. I've only been a cop for about 6 months now, but I wish I had read the book before I became a cop. The book offers great advice on choosing a department. It also has inspired me to write more reports and write them better. One of the main points I took from the book was to never sacrafice your integrity. I didn't like how the auther put a little introductory phrase before almost every single paragraph in the book. If he didn't do that, the book would probably only be 60 pages long.
      • Review:: 'a must read for thoughtful young people entering police work Barry Baker was a street cop for 20 years in a very tough town before taking promotion. He accurately reflects the central role of patrol - street work - and does not sugar-coat or avoid difficult issues. The conciseness of the book is a strength. His advice to young people is genuine and not idealistic or poorly informed. A nice job.
